Pompey beat Leicester
Rix will have been encouraged by Portsmouth's win
Portsmouth 2-1 Leicester
Rowan Vine, an 18-year-old junior professional, came off the substitute's bench to score a last-minute winner and interrupt the pre-season plans of Leicester manager Peter Taylor. Leicester controlled much of the match but were caught by Pompey's late revival in which they scored twice. The visitors went ahead shortly before half-time when Gary Rowett was fouled by Peter Crouch as they competed for a Dennis Wise corner and Muzzy Izzet stepped up to convert the spot-kick. Taylor sent on his latest signing, £3m James Scowcroft, at the start of the second half, but he twice blundered with only goalkeeper Chris Tardif to beat. Scowcroft sent a header from six yards straight at the keeper in the 46th minute and then shot weakly at Chris Tardif from 15 yards. Leicester were made to pay for their missed chances when Portsmouth equalised in the 66th minute. Crouch appeared to be held back by Andy Impey and Lee Bradbury stepped forward to convert the penalty with Portsmouth's first on-target shot of the match. Their second came when Vine ran clear on the left to beat Simon Royce with a left-foot shot from 10 yards only six minutes after coming on as a replacement for Bradbury.
