Hull cruise to win over Killie
Hull conceded their first goal in three pre-season games but still managed to
beat a below-strength Kilmarnock side quite comfortably in front of a crowd of
3,663.
Jamaican international Theo Whitmore set them on their way to a 3-1 win with the first two goals and Gary Alexander added a third to make up for missing a penalty. A poor first half was brightened up by a brilliant point-blank save by Killie keeper Colin Meldrum from Rodney Rowe. But both sides stepped up the tempo after the break and Whitmore got in front of his marker to thump home the opening goal from Ben Petty's 51st-minute cross. Killie drew level in the 67th minute when Paul di Giacomo found space at the far post to head home a long cross from the right by Mickael Pizzo. City regained the lead in the 81st minute when Whitmore scored with another fierce drive after a good build-up down the right involving Alexander and Ryan Williams. Four minutes later Alexander broke through onto a pass from Julian Johnsson to slide home Hull's third goal. Ten minutes earlier Alexander had had a penalty well saved by deputy keeper Colin Stewart after he himself had been sent sprawling by Robbie Henderson. The game ended on a bizarre note when referee Roger Furnandiz harshly sent off Killie defender James Fowler for a last-minute foul on David Beresford.
