Honduras win Copa play-off

Honduras's Martinez celebrates after scoring
Honduras beat Uruguay 5-4 on penalties (2-2 after extra-time)

Honduras crowned a historic debut in the Copa America by defeating Uruguay on penalties to take third place.

The Central American side, who were only in the competition because of late withdrawals, had twice taken the lead in normal time only for their opponents to fight back each time.

But Honduran keeper Henry Enamorado proved the hero in the shoot-out, saving from Carlos Gutierrez to set his side up for victory.

Honduras scored all of their kicks and Izaguirreto scored the decisive penalty to spark wild celebrations.

Honduras struck first blood in the 14th minute. Amado Guevara sent Saul Martinez away on the right flank and the striker turned defender Gonzalo Sorondo before firing home from 12 yards.

Eight minutes later Uruguay's Rodrigo Lemos took a free kick at the edge of the penalty area and found captain Joe Bizera, who sent a powerful header into the net.

In the 42nd minute, Guevara sent a free kick in from the right side that Martinez just missed with a diving header.

But Junior Izaguirre, backing him up, scored with a driving shot that crossed the goal line before goalie Adrian Berbia knocked it out.

Three minutes later, Uruguay drew even after a scramble in the penalty area and a rebound that Andres Martinez knocked in to make it 2-2.

Honduras held the edge in the second half as the teams traded chances, with Guevara and Martinez each missing twice from in close.

Five minutes from time, Uruguay's Fabian Estoyanoff mishit a rushed header over the crossbar from inside the box.

In the shoot-out, Gutierrez was the only man to miss and Izaguirre blasted the winning penalty into the top right-hand corner to start Honduran celebrations.
