England v Spain clockwatch
England v Spain - clockwatch
All the action from Villa Park as Sven Goran Eriksson takes charge of the England team for the first time.

19:50 As the band starts playing God Save the Queen, the TV cameras turn their attention to Eriksson.

The new manager, who claims to have been studying the national anthem, nervously tries to mouth the words - but struggles to convince viewers that he has learned the song.

20:00 The Eriksson era begins as Spain kick off.

1 min: A superb midfield tackle by Nicky Butt sends Nick Barmby clear. He tries a shot, but his effort is well wide.

3: Manuel Pablo crosses from the right, but Ismael Urzaiz - at full stretch - stabs the ball wide.

7: Paul Scholes launches a promising attack, Michael Owen takes the ball and charges straight at the Spanish defence - but he fails to link up with Andy Cole on the right and the move breaks down.

11: After an impressive period of Spanish play, England debutant Chris Powell makes an excellent break down the left flank and crosses into the box, but the ball is headed clear.

18: Ivan Helguera tries his luck with a looping 35-yard volley - but David James safely holds the shot.

24: England, still finding their feet with an experimental line-up, push on without penetrating a well organised Spain defence. Scholes has to resort to a 30-yard shot that does not trouble keeper Iker Casillas.

30: England's first corner. David Beckham sends over a cross to the far post, Nicky Butt gets a header in, but Casillas dives to his left to catch the ball.

31:Barmby, moving over to the right flank, begins England's best move so far. Beckham cuts inside and plays a through-ball for Owen, who just fails to get on the end of the pass.

37: Barmby scores the first goal for England under Eriksson's management. Owen lofts a pass over the top of the Spain defence for his Liverpool team-mate, who is undeterred by the on-rushing keeper Casillas and prods the ball into the empty net.

42: England, boosted by the goal, are suddenly in complete control. Another sweeping attacking move sees Andy Cole cut from left to right across the edge of the Spanish area, before testing Casillas with a low shot.

44: More good work from England, as this time Powell links up with Barmby, who in turn gives it to Andy Cole in the box. The United striker lays the ball back to Owen, whose curling shot is palmed away by Casillas.

45: The Greek referee blows the whistle for half-time, to end an encouraging first 45 minutes for Eriksson.

46: Eriksson had said he would try as many players as possible - and England kick off the second half with six new names.

Nigel Martyn, Ugo Ehiogu, Michael Ball, Gavin McCann, Frank Lampard and Emile Heskey come on.

James, Powell, Beckham, Butt, Scholes and Rio Ferdinand make way.

47: One of the new faces, Lampard, shoots just wide from 25 yards.

49: Mendieta breaks into the England box on the right - but his diagonal shot fails to test Martyn.

54: England go further ahead through substitute Heskey. Lampard's corner causes problems in the Spain defence, as Casillas flaps at the cross. The ball falls for Heskey, who has the simple task of slotting the ball into the ungaurded net from six yards out.
England 2-0 Spain

56: Lively Spanish substitute Javier Moreno threatens the England defence - but his cross-shot from the right is just wide of the target.

58: Another England corner - and almost another Heskey goal. But the striker's goal-bound header is cleared off the line.

64: Three more substitutions for Spain, as Mendieta, Luis Enrique and goalkeeper Casillas are replaced by Sergi, Victor and Canizares.

69: A third goal for England, from another Lampard corner. The Spanish defence evaporates and Middlesbrough defender Ehiogu - at the ground he graced for many years as a Villa player - rises unmarked to send a header into the back of the net.
England 3-0 Spain

76 England's final substitution of the night, as Gary Neville replaces his brother Phil in defence.

78 Penalty for Spain, as the dangerous Moreno goes down in the box under Ehiogu's challenge. Moreno takes the spot-kick himself, tries a cheeky dummy and then shoots to Martyn's left - but the Leeds keeper anticipates the strike and keeps it out with a fine save.

80: Spain complete their seven substitutions, with Jose Etxeberria and Ruben Baraja replacing Raul and Pep Guardiola.

87: Sergi shoots over the bar for Spain, as the visitors look for a consolation goal to take home with them.

88: Ball and Sol Campbell combine well to scramble the ball off the England line, after Etxeberria's cross leaves Martyn stranded and looks like giving Spain a certain goal.

93: The final whistle goes, to give Eriksson an impressive victory in his first game as England boss.
