Wimbledon striker Paul Robinson has joined Dundee United on loan.

The 22-year-old will be at Tannadice until the end of the season and a permanent transfer could follow should he impress in the Scottish Premier League.

Bobby Robson is said to have agreed to let Robinson leave "reluctantly" when he moved to First Division Wimbledon for 1.5m at the start of the season.

But the player has fallen out of favour with the south London club.

Important addition

Dundee United manager Alex Smith said: "Paul is a talented striker with a great attitude to the game and a will to win.

"He's an important addition to my squad at Tannadice and I'm delighted to have lured him here.

"I'm confident he can deliver goals for us and I'm sure United fans will take to him."

Robinson was signed for Premiership club Newcastle from Darlington by Kenny Dalglish for 500,000 in 1998.

He made 11 first-team starts during his time at St James' Park, scoring on his Uefa Cup debut against CSKA Sofia.

Robinson hit the headlines in August 1999 when then Newcastle boss Ruud Gullit opted to play him in the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland rather than Alan Shearer.

The Magpies lost the game 2-1 and Gullit resigned days later after his gamble backfired.

Robinson has already had a loan spell with Second Division Burnley.
