Lincoln 4-1 Chesterfield
Struggling Lincoln made light of their poor league form to destroy Chesterfield with a 4-1 win in their LDV Vans Trophy northern area semi-final.

The Imps were comfortable winners but had to survive some tremendous pressure from a Chesterfield team who created enough chances to have been so far ahead by half-time that Lincoln would have been out of it.

An indication of the amount of pressure Lincoln were under was that the Spireites earned 11 corners to just one for the home team, but it was Lincoln who took their chances.

The opening goal came in the 32nd minute when Lincoln skipper John Finnigan sent over a 40-yard pass to put Paul Smith away down the right flank.

His low cross was knocked in at the near post by Lee Thorpe.

Lincoln grabbed a second goal nine minutes after the break with Thorpe and Smith involved in the build-up before the ball fell to the feet of youngster Gareth Grant, who had the easy task of side-footing it home from six yards.

Luke Beckett and David Reeves missed a hatful of chances for the Spireites and Lincoln somehow held out thanks to some desperate defending.

With 15 minutes left, Thorpe scored his second goal of the game with a right-foot shot from just inside the box to put the result beyond doubt.

Chesterfield pulled a goal back from Steve Payne in the 85th minute but in stoppage time Justin Walker completed the scoring with a superb chip from outside the box.
