Awesome Man Utd extend lead
![]() Charlton keeper Kiely saved an Arsenal penalty
New Year's Day football round-up
Manchester United moved 11 points clear at the top of the Premiership with a convincing 3-1 defeat of West Ham. The leaders totally dominated the first-half which started with a goal inside three minutes for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Stuart Pearce's own goal after 33 minutes added to West Ham's troubles, and United were 3-0 up before the hour mark through Dwight Yorke's header. Frederic Kanoute headed a consolation for the Hammers. Arsenal's fading title hopes suffered a major setback when they started the new year with a 1-0 defeat at Charlton Athletic. It was the worst possible result for the Gunners, who had hoped to close the gap on United. Jonatan Johansson poached his 13th goal of the season to punish sloppy Arsenal defending at The Valley.
Arsene Wenger's side wasted a great chance to equalise in the second half when Nelson Vivas's penalty was brilliantly saved by Dean Kiely.
Match report Sunderland leap-frogged Ipswich Town into third place in the Premiership table by beating George Burley's side 4-1 at the Stadium of Light. Ipswich started well thanks to a Marcus Stewart strike after just five minutes.
But Peter Reid's men responded with goals from Julio Arca, Kevin Phillips, Daniele Dichio and Stefan Schwarz. Match report Liverpool left it late to beat Southampton 2-1 at Anfield. Steven Gerrard opened the scoring with a sensational 35-yard drive and the Merseysiders looked set for a good start to the year. That was until awful defending allowed the unmarked Trond Soltvedt to fire a shot into the net.
A draw looked certain until Markus Babbel grabbed Liverpool's winner just four minutes from time.
Match report Leeds United had to come from behind to rescue a point against Middlesbrough in a 1-1 draw at Elland Road.
Alen Boksic's solo effort put Boro in front at half time but Leeds' recent loan signing Robbie Keane equalised from the penalty spot.
Match report Chelsea edged out Aston Villa 1-0 at Stamford Bridge but needed a helping hand (or foot) in the process. A horrendous mistake by Villa keeper David James gifted the Blues all three points.
James, whose handling error in last season's FA Cup final led directly to Chelsea's winner, kicked an attempted clearance straight at Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who lobbed the ball across the line.
Match report Derby continued their climb with a vital 1-0 win against Everton to leave the Toffees in relegation trouble.
Deon Burton's cleverly-worked 20th-minute goal was all that separated the two sides.
Match report Bottom club Bradford City stunned Leicester by winning 2-1 at Filbert Street to give their relegation fight fresh impetus. Bradford took a two-goal lead through Eoin Jess, on his debut, and then Wayne Jacobs.
Muzzy Izzet's penalty was no more than a consolation for the Foxes.
Match report Coventry City and Manchester City drew 1-1 at Highfield Road.
Paulo Wanchope put the visitors ahead just after half time but Marc Edworthy equalised to save the Sky Blues. Match report In the Nationwide League Division One, Fulham suffered a shock 2-0 defeat at Stockport County after goals from Jarkko Wiss and Peter Clark.
Bolton strengthened their position with a 2-1 win at Preston while Birmingham suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.
