Brighton 2-0 Cardiff
Brighton boss Micky Adams put one over on his former assistant Alan Cork as the Seagulls clinched their sixth consecutive home win with a 2-0 LDV Vans Trophy victory over Cardiff.

This was Cardiff's first defeat in 12 matches since Cork took charge in September and they have still to beat Brighton in knockout competitions.

The Bluebirds were left with a mountain to climb after Brighton eased into a two-goal lead after only 20 minutes.

Debutant midfielder Lee Johnson, 19, volleyed Brighton ahead from the edge of the area on 13 minutes and central defender Danny Cullip doubled the advantage seven minutes later.

Diving header

Cullip beat former Albion goalkeeper Mark Walton with a powerful diving header following a free-kick by Paul Watson.

Teenage striker Scott Ramsay, called up with leading scorer Bobby Zamora relegated to the bench, should have made it three 11 minutes before the break but put a free header wide.

Cardiff, fielding only four first-team regulars, improved after the break but Brighton's Dutch keeper Michael Kuipers was seldom seriously troubled.

Albion substitute Gary Hart also saw a dipping shot rebound off the bar in stoppage time as the much-changed Seagulls proved good value for their 13th win out of the last 16 games.

Brighton: Kuipers, Watson, Cullip, Crosby, Wicks, Mayo, Brooker, Melton, Johnson, Steele, Ramsay. Subs: Hart, Carpenter, Jones, Hammond, Zamora.

Cardiff: Walton, Low, Greene, Weston, McCulloch, Thompson, Bonner, Hill, Brayson, Nogan, Collins. Subs: Bowen, Gabbidon, Buttery, Evans, Fortune-West.

Referee: M North (Wimborne)
