Eriksson lets Taylor lead the way
Taylor and Beckham
Peter Taylor has installed David Beckham as captain
Sven Goran Eriksson has ruled himself out of taking part-time control of England's World Cup ties against Finland and Albania as he intends to see out his contract with Italian club Lazio.

The Swede, whose term at the Rome club ends on 30 June, insisted he would "absolutely not be on the bench in March".

Eriksson intends to "respect" his contract with the Italian champions but will also continue to consult with caretaker manager Peter Taylor with whom he has been holding "very positive" talks in Rome.

Taylor, who has been re-appointed coach of the national team for the friendly with Spain, has admitted he is looking forward to working with Eriksson after receiving assurances that he would have the final say on team selection when he is in charge.

The Leicester boss, who will once again be aided by Manchester United assistant boss Steve McClaren, declared: "I'm delighted to continue in the role of caretaker manager for the Spain game.

"To manage your country is such an honour and Turin was a great experience.

Summit meeting

"Having met Sven, there is no doubt in my mind that we can look forward to enjoying a good working rapport."

Taylor set aside preparations for Leicester's clash with Leeds on Saturday to have his first conversations with England's manager-elect in Rome.

Taylor was joined in Rome by FA executive director David Davies and Eriksson's right-hand man Tord Grip, who has already started working for the governing body.

FA chief executive Adam Crozier, meanwhile, paid tribute to the immediate impact made by Taylor in the friendly against Italy, and thanked Leicester and Manchester United for their support.

Crozier said: "Everyone at the FA was delighted with the way that Peter Taylor and Steve McClaren carried out their responsibilities in Turin against Italy, as was Sven Goran Eriksson.

"Since the Italy game, we have enjoyed a series of discussions with Leicester City and Manchester United.

I think he (Eriksson) was quite happy with what he saw in the last game - that I was willing to give younger players a chance

"Both clubs have been extremely supportive in allowing Peter and Steve to continue their roles with England despite their club commitments.

"Their support is very much appreciated by us all."

Taylor had said he wanted sole charge of team and tactics if he was put in charge, and the chances of Eriksson having an input receded anyway with Lazio owner Sergio Cragnotti confirming the Swede would stay as coach until the end of the season.

Younger players

Taylor said: "I think he (Eriksson) was quite happy with what he saw in the last game - that I was willing to give younger players a chance.

"I think he feels that with the four or five players who dropped out, it would have been a strong side."

Taylor, however, says he might be tempted to draft in some experienced players for the match with Spain in view of the qualifier to follow against Finland.

Looking ahead to the game against the Spaniards, Taylor said: "I would like to go with the same approach as I did for the Italian game but I will obviously be keeping one eye on the qualifying game against Finland.

"If it means we might need a bit more experience in there because of that game, then that would be something I would think about."

Barracked

Cragnotti acted to back Eriksson continuing as Lazio coach after he was barracked by visiting fans in Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Parma, which followed a 1-0 Champions League loss at Anderlecht in the opening game of the second phase.

Lazio's owner said: "We should not criticise a coach who has helped us win five trophies and we will fight on for all our objectives until the end.

"Mr Eriksson is the coach of Lazio until the end of the championship. This message was also given to the players.

"Therefore all of the technical staff will remain until the end of the season. This clarification is necessary to clear up any rumours and misunderstandings.
