Aussie women stop England short

Leah Poulton
Opener Leah Poulton hit 66 to set the Aussies in good stead

England Women fell an agonising four runs short of Australia in their final World Twenty20 warm-up game in Taunton.

Needing 18 to win from the final over, Caroline Atkins and Katherine Brunt could only make 13 - taking their unbroken last-wicket partnership to 45.

With opener Leah Poulton hitting 66, the Aussies laid down the gauntlet with a total of 142-5.

Claire Taylor hit 42 from 25 balls to start England's reply but none of her partners could stay with her.

In the other warm-up matches, West Indies beat Sri Lanka by 40 runs, New Zealand held India 17 runs short and South Africa bowled out Pakistan for 90 in a 36-run win.

All of the teams take a day off before the tournament opener in Taunton on Thursday.

South Africa take on West Indies in the opener before England, the world 50-over champions, face India.
