Fiery Fitzpatrick calls it a day
Cathryn Fitzpatrick
Fitzpatrick has been a key figure for the Southern Stars
Australia's Cathryn Fitzpatrick has announced her retirement from international cricket.

The 39-year-old confirmed her decision after the recent Women's Quadrangular Series in India.

Fitzpatrick, the fastest bowler in the women's game, took 2-27 as they beat New Zealand in the final.

It lifted her overall tally to 180 wickets in 109 games at a cost of only 16.79 runs each, and she also claimed 60 wickets in Tests.

Fitzpatrick, who made international debut 16 years ago, said of her decision: "You can't keep playing forever and there comes a point when you have to call it a day. There are only so many pre-seasons you can do."

Having taken part in four World Cups, two of which were victorious, she is open-minded as to future plans.

She plays for the love of the game and we thank and congratulate her on an outstanding career

"I want to continue my involvement in cricket by extending my coaching role and I'm looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead."

Asked about her favourite moments in cricket she added: "I think the tour of England held some special memories.

"We played at Lord's which is an amazing experience, we completed a whitewash against England, but it was the way we played that gave me great enjoyment and satisfaction."

Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland paid his own tribute to Fitzpatrick, commenting: "She has been in a league of her own for nearly two decades.

"Like many of the female players she has dedicated herself to cricket in the most professional way without the financial reward of high profile attention.

"She plays for the love of the game and we thank and congratulate her on an outstanding career and unheralded contribution to Australian cricket."
