Mark and Steve Waugh put Australia in a commanding position as the the tourists closed the second day on 255 for five, and a lead of 68.

Glenn McGrath earlier picked up another five-wicket haul as the England batting order subsided to 187 all out on the second morning.

And Mark Waugh followed that up with a magnificent 108, sharing in a fourth wicket partnership of 107 with brother Steve (45).

England removed the Waugh twins in quick succession to stage a much needed fightback in the final session but much of the damage had already been done.

After the disappointment of being bowled out in the morning session, England picked up two early wickets.

Andrew Caddick removed Matthew Hayden without scoring and Ricky Ponting followed soon after to a rising delivery from Darren Gough.

Mark Waugh and Michael Slater steadied the Australian innings but when Caddick accounted for Slater, England were still very much in the match.

But the Waughs took the game away from them. Mark timing the ball to perfection as he brought up his first Test century at Lord's and the 19th of his Test career.

He reached his landmark off 165 balls, with 13 fours, eight years after falling for 99 at cricket headquarters to Phil Tufnell.

Australia were 25 runs ahead of England before Mark was run out by a direct hit from Darren Gough at mid-on.

At the other end Steve enjoyed some good fortune, first edging Gough over the top of the slips.

He then presented the Yorkshire paceman with a difficult diving return catch that Gough could not grasp.

But following his brother's demise, Steve Waugh soon followed, caught off the glove by Alec Stewart from the bowling of Dominic Cork.

Ominously Damien Martyn and Adam Gilchrist saw Australia through to the close and both are in the type of form to punish England further on Saturday.

Resuming from their overnight 121 for four, the home side lost Alec Stewart and Graham Thorpe in consecutive early overs, both caught by Adam Gilchrist off McGrath, to slip to 129 for six.

Stewart fell for his first ever Test duck at Lord's and McGrath claimed his fifth wicket when Craig White drove loosely at a wide delivery, also failing to trouble the scorers.

It raised McGrath's hopes of another eight wicket haul at Lord's, having picked up eight for 38 against England in 1997.

On this occasion he had to settle for five for 54, before he left it to Jason Gillespie and Shane Warne to wrap up the innings.

Dominic Cork joined forces with Ian Ward to provide some much needed resistance for Michael Atherton's side.

But Cork's confidence got the better of him and Jason Gillespie had the Derbyshire man well caught at square cover by Ricky Ponting for a bright 24.

And Ward was left unbeaten on 23 as both Caddick and Darren Gough were bowled by Warne to leave England all out for 187 at lunch.

Australia lead the five-match series 1-0 after winning at Edgbaston by an innings and 118 runs.
