Second Test, Lord's, day one: England v Australia

And it marked a frustrating day for England, who having been sent in to bat after losing the toss, endured a day disrupted by the weather. England have now lost 13 Ashes tosses out of 14, and nine in succession in all Tests. Overnight rain and early morning drizzle prevented play from starting before 1230 BST, and bad light then took the players to an early lunch with England on 11 without loss after just 20 deliveries. Further rain caused another disruption, but when the players returned Marcus Trescothick was the first wicket to fall.
He aimed an expansive drive at a wide delivery from Jason Gillespie and due to poor foot movement he edged behind to Adam Gilchrist for 16. Replays suggested that Trescothick was unfortunate as umpire Steve Bucknor should have called a no-ball against Gillespie. Mark Butcher was next to fall, having made 21, he pushed at a delivery outside off stump from Glenn McGrath and the thick edge carried to Mark Waugh at second slip. It helped Waugh to equal the world record of catches in Test cricket by a fielder of 157, a mark that he shares with former Australian captain Mark Taylor. However, Taylor achieved his total in nine fewer matches than Waugh's 113 Test career. Skipper Michael Atherton led from the front and looked in commanding form. But McGrath returned to take his crucial wicket for 37, trapping Atherton lbw, playing no stroke, although replays showed that the ball would have gone over the top of the stumps.
Graham Thorpe remained at the wicket before bad light brought play to a halt for a final time. And much of England's hopes now depend on the left-hander who has been out of action for seven weeks with a calf injury. England opted for an all-seam attack with Dominic Cork and Graham Thorpe recalled and Ashley Giles and Chris Silverwood left out of the squad. Australia lead the five-match series 1-0 after winning at Edgbaston by an innings and 118 runs and they have named an unchanged side for this match.
England: MA Atherton (capt), ME Trescothick, MA Butcher, GP Thorpe, AJ Stewart (wkt), IJ Ward, MR Ramprakash, C White, DG Cork, D Gough, AR Caddick. Australia: SR Waugh (capt), MJ Slater, ML Hayden, RT Ponting, ME Waugh, DR Martyn, AC Gilchrist (wkt), SK Warne, B Lee, JN Gillespie, GD McGrath.
