Nantie Hayward

DOB: 6.3.77
Team: Eastern Province

Test debut: 2nd Test v England at Port Elizabeth, 1999/00
One-day international debut: v England at Birmingham, Emirates Triangular Tournament, 1998

Right arm fast bowler; Right hand batsman
Hayward has been groomed to take over from Allan Donald as South Africa's pace spearhead.

After bursting into Test cricket at neat 100mph against England in 1999/2000, he spent 18 months in the wilderness, suffering poor form and personal difficulties.

But he was rehabilitated into the South African side for the visit of India this year, after experimentation with several other openers failed.

A particularly effective weapon for the flame-haired Hayward is his slower ball, learned during his days as a teenage provincial baseball player.

That background is also reflected in his fieldiing in the deep and, unfortunately, his technique with the bat.
