Powell dropped for England tour

Out-of-form paceman Daren Powell has been dropped from the West Indies Test squad for their tour of England.

Powell has taken 85 Test wickets, but claimed just six at a cost of nearly 70 each as the Windies beat England in the recent Test series in the Caribbean.

All-rounder Ryan Hinds has also been omitted, while the selectors have plumped for three uncapped players.

Seamer Andrew Richardson, paceman Nelon Pascal and opener Dale Richards are the uncapped players in the 17-man squad.

Richardson, 27, was a revelation for Jamaica in the domestic season while 21-year-old Pascal has been in fine form for Grenada - while Richards, 32, has recovered from a foot injury.

"This year Richardson has been bowling very well and deserves his selection," said chairman of selectors Clyde Butts. "He is tall, accurate and has the ability to get wickets at crucial stages in the game.

"Pascal has been doing well and he has some pace and can be a handful. The selectors believe he should be given the chance to grow and feature at international level."

Also recalled to the squad are batsman Narsingh Deonarine and all-rounder David Bernard, who have been out of the side for four and six years respectively - while all-rounder Darren Sammy is included after impressing in the recent one-day series.

"Bernard has been out for a while, but over the years has been a consistent performer for Jamaica and this year has come to the show," said Butts.

"Deonarine has made over 1,000 runs and has betted really well. We felt he needed to get scores and take his game to another level and he did just that. He has been consistent and deserves this chance."

The Windies will travel to England later this month for two Tests and three one-day internationals. The first Test begins at Lord's on 6 May.
