West Indies v England 1st Test

Chris Gayle beams after the victory in Sabina Park
Gayle was among four Windies players who featured in Kingston in 2004

West Indies captain Chris Gayle said his side's innings and 23-run win over England avenged their humiliating reverse in March 2004 in Kingston.

Gayle was part of the Windies side that was dismissed for just 47 five years ago, when Steve Harmison's 7-12 earned England a 10-wicket win at Sabina Park.

"It brings back a lot of memories, it's a different way around this time, I'm happy for that," Gayle told BBC Sport.

"No-one expected this game to finish on the fourth day before tea."

Fast bowler Jerome Taylor was the pick of the West Indian bowlers, collecting five wickets as he extracted pace and movement from a pitch more conducive to the left-arm spin of Sulieman Benn, who chipped in with three second-innings dismissals.

"It was a flat track so we just needed to bowl straight and let the ball do whatever it needs to do," said Taylor, who returned his best Test bowling figures with 5-11.

The victory was made even sweeter for Gayle, who scored his first Test century in front of his home crowd as well as guide the West Indies to only their third Test win in 31 matches.

"It meant a lot to me from a personal point of view as a first-time captain in front of my home crowd, it's good to give them something to cheer about," the Jamaican said.

But despite his confidence-boosting victory - the West Indies' first in 17 matches against England since 2000 - Gayle insists England are still favourites for the second Test in Antigua, which starts on Friday, 13 February.

"England are the better team, we're trying to rebuild," he said.

"It's a good start and hopefully we can capitalise on this. The last time we had a start like this against South Africa, we lost the series 2-1.

"But it's good to see our all-round cricket come together in this game."
