Richards handed Windies call-up

Devon Smith
Smith has started the season in good form

Barbados opening batsman Dale Richards is the only newcomer in the West Indies squad for next month's opening Test against England in Jamaica.

The 32-year-old and the recalled Devon Smith are vying to partner captain Chris Gayle at the top of the order.

Left-hander Sewnarine Chattergoon, who had struggled during the tour of New Zealand in December and January, has been dropped.

Off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth is also recalled to the squad.

Richards scored a century against Trinidad and Tobago in the first match of the regional season two weeks and on Friday made 68 for Barbados against the Leeward Islands in St. Maarten.

Most of the players who secured a 0-0 draw in December's two-Test series in New Zealand were retained for the four Test series against England which starts at Sabina Park in Kingston on 4 February.

Gayle heads the batting along with former captains Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan.

Australian-born Brendan Nash, who enjoyed a sound debut series in New Zealand, boosts the middle order while talented 22-year-old Xavier Marshall keeps his place despite a disappointing tour.

Denesh Ramdin, who has been West Indies wicketkeeper for all 29 tests since his debut in 2005, retains the gloves.

The fast bowling remains in the hands of Fidel Edwards, Jerome Taylor and Daren Powell, with rookie Lionel Baker, who made his debut in New Zealand, completing the quartet.

Lanky left-armer Sulieman Benn is the other specialist spinner alongside Jaggernauth whose last Test was against Australia at Sabina Park a year ago.

All-rounder Dwayne Bravo remains on the sidelines after ankle surgery but is hoping to return later in the series.

West Indies: Chris Gayle (captain), Lionel Baker, Sulieman Benn, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Fidel Edwards, Amit Jaggernauth, Xavier Marshall, Brendan Nash, Daren Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Dale Richards, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Devon Smith, Jerome Taylor.
