Nel is one of the most entertaining characters in the modern game
South Africa have recalled fast bowler Andre Nel for the forthcoming Test series in England.
Nel was controversially omitted from the squad which toured India in March as a row over racial quotas resurfaced.
But the 30-year-old will be one of six pacemen vying for places in the team to face England in four Tests, the first of which starts at Lord's on 10 July.
The side will again be led by Graeme Smith, who hit two double centuries in the drawn series in England in 2003.
Although the selectors have chosen two spinners in Paul Harris and Robin Peterson, they are expected to rely heavily on pace in their attempt to continue an impressive run which has brought them wins in Pakistan and Bangladesh and a draw in India in their last three series away from home.
The attack will be spearheaded by Dale Steyn, arguably the best young fast bowler in world cricket, the experienced Makhaya Ntini and all-rounder Jacques Kallis, with Morne Morkel, Nel and Monde Zondeki providing the back-up.
"It is a long tour with two lots of back-to-back Test matches and we all know what the rate of attrition of fast bowlers can be, which is why we selected an extra one," said convenor of selectors Joubert Strydom.
"In addition, we feel we will need to give Dale Steyn a bit of a rest as he has been bowling regularly in the Indian Premier League.
"He is one of our key weapons and we want him to be at his best when the Test matches gets under way.
"The same applies to Makhaya Ntini, while Morne Morkel is coming back from injury."
The batting line-up is the same as that chosen for the series in India, which ended 1-1, and there is again no place for Herschelle Gibbs, although he is likely to be picked for the one-day section of the tour which follows the Tests.
