Cricket World Cup: Banned Butt made Pakistan TV pundit

Salman Butt returns to Lahore
Butt has made 78 appearances for Pakistan during his career

Banned former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has landed a new job working as a television pundit in his home country during the Cricket World Cup.

Butt was banned for 10 years, five of which are suspended, when he was found guilty of corruption after allegations of spot-fixing last year in England.

"I got a good offer. Since I'm doing nothing I thought it would allow me to test a new area," said the 26-year-old.

"We have signed him up purely as a cricket expert," said Channel 5.

The Pakistan Cricket Board, which has terminated Butt's central contract, refused to comment on the appointment.

Butt and team-mates Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif were banned from the sport by an International Cricket Council (ICC) tribunal last week for their part in match-fixing allegations in the fourth Test against England at Lord's last year.

The News of the World newspaper reported deliveries were bowled at specific points during England's innings after a payment had been made to businessman Mazhar Majeed.

The BBC has also learned that Butt had been investigated by the ICC's anti-corruption unit in connection with "suspicious" phone calls and texts from Majeed during the World Twenty20 in the West Indies last May.

Butt still retains the right to appeal in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas), although the 26-year-old, along with Amir and Asif, is also facing criminal charges of conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments and also conspiracy to cheat.

The trio, along with Majeed, must appear at the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on 17 March.

Butt has made 78 one-day appearances for Pakistan, scoring 2,725 runs with a highest score of 136.
