Cricket World Cup: Shahid Afridi named Pakistan captain

Shahid Afridi will captain Pakistan in the ICC World Cup after his side's one-day series win in New Zealand.

The all-rounder, who has been leading Pakistan in limited-over internationals since last year, will be supported at the World Cup by Misbah-ul-Haq.

Misbah, named as vice-captain, had been touted as a possible skipper after leading Pakistan to a 1-0 win in the Test series against the Kiwis.

Afridi has scored more than 6,500 runs in his 311 one-day internationals.

His Pakistan team clinched their one-day series victory over New Zealand on Thursday, thanks to a maiden ODI century by Ahmed Shehzad.

While his limited-overs captaincy has been successful, Afridi stepped down as Pakistan's Test captain last July and retired from Test cricket after his side's 150-run loss to Australia at Lord's in the second game of their series.

The 30-year-old had only returned to Tests after a four-year absence when he was named skipper for Pakistan's tour to England.

Pakistan play their first World Cup match against Kenya on 23 February in Sri Lanka.
