New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris faces six weeks on the sidelines after breaking his thumb.
The 33-year-old damaged his hand batting for the Black Caps in their opening Twenty20 international against the West Indies and now faces surgery.
The hosts have yet to name a replacement for the all-rounder, who retired from Test cricket in February, for Sunday's second game in Hamilton.
New Zealand lost the opening match on a super over tie-breaker.
