Vengsarkar takes India's top job
Dilip Vengsarkar
Vengsarkar score 17 Test centuries with a best of 166
Former India batsman Dilip Vengsarkar has been named as his country's new chairman of selectors.

The 50-year-old, who retired in 1992 after 116 Tests and 129 one-day games, replaces Kiran More, who served the Indian board's maximum of four years.

"He is the right man for the post, with his experience of top-class cricket," BCCI secretary Niranjan Singh said.

Former spinner Venkatapathy Raju succeeds VB Chandrasekhar on the five-man selection panel.

The selection committee comprises one elected representative from each of the five zones outlined by the Board of Control of Cricket in India, with the most senior figure named as chairman.

Vengsarkar made his international debut in January 1976 and scored 6,868 Test runs at an average of 42.

He captained the side in 10 matches, winning two and losing five.

Raju, the youngest member of the panel at 37, played 28 Tests between 1990 and 2001, claiming 93 wickets at a cost of 30.72 each with a best of 6-87 against Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad in 1994.

His one-day career was shorter, from 1990 to 1996, with 63 wickets from 53 matches costing 31.96 and a best of 4-46.

Ranjib Biswal, Sanjay Jagdale and Bhupinder Singh retained their posts as the other members of the panel.

Federal agriculture minister Sharad Pawar was re-elected unopposed for a new two-year term as BCCI president.
