Mashud points finger at batsmen

Bangladesh's bowling effort was not backed up by their batsmen
Stand-in skipper Khaled Mashud admitted Bangladesh's batting had left plenty of room for improvement following their defeat by New Zealand in Dhaka.

They were beaten by an innings and 99 runs after being bowled out for 126, but Mashud said their first innings total of 177 was more significant.

"We needed to score at least 300 runs in the first innings to make it competitive," the wicket-keeper said.

The second and final Test of the series begins in Chittagong next Tuesday.

"Our spinners did well and we now hope to put in a better batting performance in the second Test," added Mashud, who led the team because Habibul Bashar is still recovering from a finger injury.

Bangladesh have dropped opener Hannan Sarkar for the second Test.

Aftab Ahmed takes his place and spinner Enamul Haque Jr has also been added to the squad.

New Zealand's win was secured by spin bowlers Daniel Vettori and Paul Wiseman, who shared nine wickets between them in the Bangladesh second innings.

Vettori said the impatience of the Bangladesh batsmen had been the main cause of their downfall.

"Our spinners created the pressure and it was nice to see them bowl well in tandem," commented captain Stephen Fleming.

"It's always good to win on a sub-continent pitch.

"It was a comprehensive victory. We batted well, especially Brendon McCullum, who played an outstanding knock," Fleming added.

McCullum was named Man of the Match for his maiden Test century (143) which enabled New Zealand to post a total of 402 after being 139-5 at one stage.

"I just played my natural game and was able to build partnerships with late-order batsmen," he said.

Bangladesh squad for second Test: Khaled Mashud (captain), Rajin Saleh, Javed Omar, Mohammad Ashraful, Manjurul Islam, Tapash Baishya, Mushfiqur Rahman, Mohammad Rafique, Tareq Aziz, Nafis Iqbal, Alok Kapali, Aftab Ahmed, Enamul Haque Jr.
