The Duckworth-Lewis method handed the NatWest Trophy final to Gloucestershire after rain hit their reply to Warwickshire's 205 for seven. Under the formulation Gloucestershire won the title, their fourth successive one-day final, by 22 runs. Skipper Mark Alleyne's side became the first team to win both major knockout competitions - the Benson and Hedges Cup and the NatWest - in the same season two years running. When the rain hit the final at Lord's Gloucestershire were well-placed at 122 for three after 29.4 overs.
Gloucestershire held sway when the rain came but they lost Australian all-rounder Ian Harvey to the ball before play was stopped, caught on the square leg boundary for 47. Harvey and opener Kim Barnett, who was dropped at slip on three, shared in a 53-run stand for the second wicket before Barnett became Allan Donald's second victim. The South African paceman had clawed Warwickshire back into the match with two wickets in two spells and was a forlorn sight when the match was eventually abandoned. He gave his all in what was likely to be his final appearance at Lord's for Warwickshire and his efforts were rewarded with the man-of-the-match award.
Donald was brought back into the attack and he again made the breakthrough to get a ball to clatter into Barnett's middle stump. Earlier, Giles, celebrating his recall to the England Test squad, hit 60 in Warwickshire's total. His innings helped Warwickshire bounce back from the loss of two early wickets, but when he went in the 35th over they lost their way. Gloucestershire strangled their runs in the final third of their innings as both Mike Smith, who rocked Warwickshire with two early wickets, and Hancock bowled a tight line which forced the batsmen to take risks. Captain Neil Smith added valuable late runs with 28 off 29 balls but, after being well positioned by Giles, his side should have scored more.
