Tinu Yohannan

DOB: 18.02.79
Team: Kerala
Test debut: 1st Test v England, Mohali, 2001
ODI debut: 3rd ODI v West Indies, Barbados 2002

Right-arm medium-fast bowler; right-hand batsman

Yohannan is viewed as a real pace bowling prospect by the Indian selectors, who picked him to face England in the first Test at Mohali last December with just eight first-class matches behind him.

He dismissed openers Mark Butcher and Marcus Trescothick in both innings as India won by 10 wickets, but failed to take a wicket in the second game at Ahmedabad and lost his place in the side.

A former student at Dennis Lillee's fast bowling academy in India, Yohannan may have an important role to play in England following Javagal Srinath's decision to quit Test cricket.

It could all have been very different with athletics taking his initial sporting interest, not surprising as his father broke the Asian Games high jump record in 1974.

Yohannan took up the long jump but the lure of cricket was too strong - his boyhood heroes were Curtly Ambrose and Allan Donald - and he soon made rapid strides in junior cricket.
