Marcus Trescothick

DOB: 25.12.75
County: Somerset
Test debut: v West Indies, Old Trafford 2000
One-day international debut: v Zimbabwe, The Oval 2000

Left hand opening batsman, right arm medium pace bowler
Trescothick continues to grow in stature as an international batsman and is seen as favourite to one day succeed Nasser Hussain as skipper after leading the team in one match on the tour to Zimbabwe in October.

It was one-day cricket which gave the Somerset batsman his break, as he was called up as an injury replacement for the NatWest Series against Zimbabwe and the West Indies in 2000.

He impressed immediately, with 79 in a losing effort against Zimbabwe.

Although happiest against seam bowling, he answered questions about his ability to play spin with a maiden Test century (122) against Sri Lanka in Galle last March.

A quick scorer, he will not allow himself to be tied down for long, working in an explosive partnership with fellow left-hander Nick Knight.
