Matthew Hoggard
The absence of Darren Gough and Andy Caddick left Hoggard as the spearhead of one of the most inexperienced bowling attacks ever to lead England into a Test series. He emerged with many plaudits, taking nine wickets in the series and containing India's top order without having to resort to the leg-side field used by his colleagues. But, with Gough and Caddick back for the one-day series, England have yet to settle on their best strike-bowling line-up. Capable of genuine pace when his rhythm is right, Hoggard also moves the ball off the seam and picked up six wickets against Pakistan at Old Trafford last May. He missed the subsequent Ashes series because of injury, the first major fitness problems of his career. But he acquitted himself well on his one-day debut in Zimbabwe, bowling Andy Flower, one of the world's best batsmen, with a perfect inswinging yorker in the second match, and earning a misely economy rate of 3.66.
