James Foster

DOB: 4.8.80
County: Essex
Test debut: 1st Test v India, Mohali 2001
One-day international debut: v Zimbabwe, Harare 2001

Wicket-keeper, right hand batsman

Alec Stewart's decision to take a break from touring provided England with the opportunity to take a close look at Foster, who had been identified by the selectors as the best young wicket-keeper in the country.

Foster suffered a disappointing debut one-day series in Zimbabwe and a troubled Test bow against India in Mohali.

But he came of age in the second and third Tests in India, though, scoring over 40 in the first innings of both matches and showing a willingness to adapt.

His vocal authority behind the stumps has also improved as his confidence has grown.

But he must still prove his worth with the bat if he is not to be replaced in the one-day side ahead of next year's World Cup.
