Tim Bresnan appreciates he will have to fight for his England place once Andrew Flintoff recovers from knee surgery.

Bresnan took his first Test wickets in the win over West Indies at Durham but understands why Flintoff will come straight back into contention.

"Freddie is a massive asset to have in English cricket," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. "He is such a good player.

"He's an unbelievable cricketer. And, when he's available, the selectors will clearly have options for the summer."

Yorkshire all-rounder Bresnan, who made his Test debut against West Indies at Lord's earlier this month, finally grabbed his first scalp when he removed Brendan Nash at the Riverside on Monday.

He's well within his rights to walk straight back into the team on his past performances and what he has done

The 24-year-old then went on to oust Denesh Randin and Fidel Edwards to finish with creditable second-innings figures of 3-45.

But despite playing a part in an impressive innings victory, and overall 2-0 series win, Bresnan knows his place could be under threat from a fit and firing Flintoff for the forthcoming Ashes series.

"He's well within his rights to walk straight back into the team on his past performances and what he has done," he added.

"But I will be working hard to retain my place."
