SECOND ONE-DAY INTERNATIONAL, Trent Bridge: England 85-0 (14.1 overs) bt South Africa 83 (23 overs) by 10 wickets
England handed South Africa a devastating thrashing to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match one-day series.
Stuart Broad took five wickets and Matt Prior picked up six catches as South Africa were shot out for just 83.
Andrew Flintoff grabbed three cheap wickets and Steve Harmison collected two in his only over at Trent Bridge.
Prior and Ian Bell took just 14.1 overs to chase down the measly target, England winning by 10 wickets half an hour before the scheduled dinner break.

ENGLAND INNINGS
"Jacques Kallis said we would see a different South Africa team today. He didn't say it would be their U13s!"
Dave, Cambridge in the TMS inbox
15th over - 85-0 Nel drags down the first ball of the over and Prior is onto it in a flash, marmalising him over mid-wicket for four. England win by 10 wickets with 35.5 overs to spare, and you might not see a more emphatic victory by England for as long as you live. It was a fine bowling effort from England, of that there is no doubt, but the South African batting was a load of old rubbish.
14th over - 81-0 Bell tucks Kallis to square-leg for one before Prior top-edges an attempted hook, but again the ball lands in no-man's land at mid-wicket. Bell fiddles Kallis to mid-wicket and he and Prior amble a single. Three needed.
"Assuming this is going to be all over by six, why don't they play that Twenty20 game that got rained off last week? They're all going to be sat around with nothing much better to do."
Bob, Leeds in the TMS inbox
13th over - 77-0 That's nasty from Prior, who launches Nel through the covers for four to move to 38. One more for Prior and Bell nicks the strike with a poke to mid-off. Seven required.
"Not a complete disaster for SA, everyone got off the mark at least."
Will Collins in the TMS inbox
12th over - 71-0 Sweet shot from Bell, forcing Steyn through the covers for four to move to 21. And that's peche de la peche from Belly, steering Steyn a bit straighter this time for another four. England require 13 from 38 overs. Can they do it?
11th over - 62-0 Prior climbs into that stroke, clobbering Nel straight down the ground for four. Nel hits back well, squaring Prior up with the final ball of his over.
10th over - 58-0 Prior clips Ntini to mid-on for a single before dropping into the leg-side for another. In between is a leg-bye, and Prior finishes off the over with a heave from outside off-stump to the mid-wicket fence. Michael Hammill (see below), seeing as I'm a Catholic, then yes, it is highly unlikely I will be using any Jewish or Islamic imagery.
"'Check Morkel for stigmata! Someone's nailed his feet to the crease'. Having just read your above oh so clever Christian metaphor, I await with interest your Jewish and Islamic offerings - or would you feel less safe on their territory?"

9th over - 52-0 England already halfway there, and Steyn is making it easy for them - two successive leg-side wides, before Prior slices him down to third-man for one. Bell drives into the off-side for a single. Steyn is all over the oche here - another leg-side wide followed by another no-ball. Free hit for Prior, and he's 'caught' again at deep mid-wicket... England run one. Bell dabs to point for a single, before Prior rides his luck again, top-edging a hook and finding wide open space at mid-wicket. England require 32 from, erm, 41 overs...
8th over - 42-0 The 'mid-innings' break is not due until 1800 apparently, so England could get this wrapped up before then. One for Bell with a flick to leg before Prior plays a brutal stroke, darting down the track and hoisting Ntini over the long-off fence for six. Believe it or not, he didn't really get hold of that... Prior steals the strike with an ease down the ground.
7th over - 34-0 Prior clumps Steyn over point for four before tucking Steyn off his pads for a single. No-ball from Steyn and Bell is caught off the free hit at mid-off - however, you can't actually be caught off a free hit. Prior plays an extraordinary shot next up, coming down the track and yanking Steyn over mid-wicket for four, before hammering Steyn through extra-cover for a couple - fine stop by Gibbs to prevent the four.
6th over - 21-0 OOF! Ntini gets one to nip back at Bell and strike the batsman slap bang in the orchestras. As Dougie Brown points out on TMS, "no amount of stretching can alleviate the pain when it hits you there..." Bell is beaten by a jaffer that holds its line outside off-stump. Ed (see below), if I was returning home this evening to my lovely Italian wife in my apartment in Milan, I don't think I'd be watching England playing cricket. I'd take the Orvieto Classico and seafood risotto though.
"Slow down lads! I was looking forward to a nice evening of cricket watching in my Milan apartment, whilst quaffing crisp Orvieto Classico and eating seafood risotto prepared for me by my lovely Italian wife. At this rate the match will be over before the bottle is uncorked and the pan is on the hob."

5th over - 21-0 That's gossamer from Bell, rocking onto the back foot and easing Steyn through cover-point for four. Steyn digs one in and Bell misses with a wild and windy waft. An inside edge for Bell and he scampers a single before Prior leans back and misses with an attempted loft over extra-cover. Steyn scythes Prior in half with a delivery that jags back and very nearly rolls back onto his stumps.
4th over - 16-0 Smashing stroke from Prior, using his feet and punching Ntini down the ground for four. One more for the Sussex gloveman with a flick to mid-wicket and Bell displays soft hands, dropping Ntini to a similar area to steal the strike.
3rd over - 10-0 Steyn bang on target to Bell, England don't need to take any chances. That said, Bell and Prior have looked far more assured than any of the South African batsmen, even in defence.
2nd over - 10-0 Lovely-looking cover-drive from Prior, but Botha pulls off a fine stop on the boundary rope to limit the batsman to three. Bell picks up a single with a thick outside-edge to mid-off. An otherwise tight over from Ntini.
1st over - 6-0 Right, we're back out and England are off the mark with four leg-byes, Steyn straying onto Bell's pads. Can England knock these runs off before the scheduled break at 1730? At this rate they will - Bell flicks Steyn through mid-wicket for a couple. What on earth is up with Duncan Bannatyne? You could turn up on Dragons' Den with a time machine that doubles as an ice cream maker and Bannatyne would "not see the point".
SOUTH AFRICA INNINGS
"Have the England team been at the Murray Mints again?"

"Jacques Kallis said in the paper today that their last match was their worst yet. I wonder what he will say about this one!"
David, Aylesbury in the TMS inbox
1626: You won't see that again in a hurry - Broad finishes with 5-23 from 10, Harmison 2-4 from one, Flintoff 3-29 from seven, Anderson 0-26 from five. We'll have a 10-minute break before England's openers return to the fray.
23rd over - Steyn b Flintoff 6, SA 83 all out Flintoff has actually been the most erratic of England's bowlers, and there's five wides courtesy of another misdirected bumper. That catch from Prior in the last over means he matches Alec Stewart's record of six in a one-day international. That's a peachy cover-drive from Steyn, the ball racing away for four, and Freddie hits back with some more chin music, which Steyn ducks jerkily underneath. BUT THAT'S ALL FOLKS! Steyn goes for an ugly hoick over mid-wicket and is castled by the perfect yorker.
Morkel c Prior b Harmison 6, SA 72-9 Oh my life, Harmison's taken another one! "It's very much been 'nickers time'," says Blowers on TMS, and I couldn't agree more - the England seamers keep putting it in the slot, and the South African batsmen keep on nibbling. Ntini is South Africa's final batsman and he survives a strangled appeal from Harmison.
22nd over - Nel c Wright b Harmison 13, SA 68-8
Harmison picks up a wicket with his first ball! Nel goes for the big heave-ho, top-edges and Wright swallows the catch at mid-wicket. Apologies, but another downside to all these wickets tumbling is that I haven't got time to add any of your erudite and amusing commets. Morkel rocks back, flashes and misses. But he does get four courtesy of a swing through mid-wicket, which means the tourists pass their previous lowest score in ODIs.
21st over - 68-7 Check Morkel for stigmata! Someone's nailed his feet to the crease, and he flashes airily outside his off-stump twice and is beaten both times by Flintoff. Morkel carves Flintoff to Harmison at third-man for one and Nel picks up another with a squeeze past Patel at short-leg. Michael West has emailed in with his answer to the "what would you polish your ball with?" question, but it involves illicit substances and Kylie Minogue, so I can't include it.
20th over - Botha c Prior b Broad 1, SA 53-7
A fifth wicket for Broad! Botha, feet nailed to the crease, flashes outside his off-stump and feathers yet another catch to wicket-keeper Prior. Here's Gunther, and he won't muck about... Nel times Broad sweetly to the long-off fence... and another four! Nel clubs Broad to cow corner this time... AND ANOTHER! That's mangled Broady's figures a bit - he finishes with 5-23, and Nel, in the space of three shots, becomes South Africa's highest scorer. Broad gets an arm round the shoulder from Pietersen and a rousing round of applause from the Trent Bridge faithful, a tremendous effort that.
"The Modern Pentathlon is all the skills required by a Cavalry Officer to escape from enemy territory. Unless that enemy territory was a French Gentlemen's Club I can't see the need for the ability to cut a cigar or quaff a brandy."
Chris Smith in the TMS inbox
19th over - 53-6 Flintoff tests Morkel out with a little bit of chin music, but it's a bit short and it's called a wide. Morkel cuts to third-man for a single and Botha picks up a single with a fend to just in front of Patel at leg-gully.
18th over - 50-6 It must be a ruddy nightmare being KP's missus at the moment - how can he prepare dinner? You wouldn't fancy eating gold-plated steak and chips every day of the week. That's another maiden over from Broad, right on the money and Botha happy to defend or leave. A bit of a dilemma for the England fans at Trent Bridge - on the one hand the Saffers are getting skittled, on the other hand this could all be over in a few hours.
17th over - Boucher c Prior b Flintoff 10, SA 50-6
And another goes down! Boucher fences outside off-stump - a nothing shot that - and feathers a catch to Prior, who comfortably takes his fourth catch. A real going over there from Flintoff - the first ball of the over lifted sharply and jagged away from Boucher, the second kept low and almost hit Boucher's off-peg, the third Boucher swatted at and picked up four over the wicket-keeper's head. The tourists in disarray here, but it's a memorable bowling display by the England attack.
16th over - 46-5 Boucher picks up a single with an inside edge past his stumps. South Africa's previous low score against England in ODIs is 107 at Lord's in 2003, in case anyone was wondering. Another over that was tighter than Rod Stewart's purse strings and England - and Broad in particular - are all over the tourists like a rash.
15th over - De Villiers lbw b Flintoff 5, SA 45-5
Boucher tucks Freddie to square-leg for a single and Broad very nearly takes De Villiers' noggin off with his return. And Flintoff has got rid of De Villiers! Freddie gets one to wobble off the seam, duck back into De Villiers and Umpire Taufel had no doubts about that one, it was plumb. Here comes Albie Morkel, who, if he wasn't an all-rounder for South Africa, would be a rather neurotic writer of comedy sketches from Greenwich Village. No! Sorry, it's not Morkel at all, South Africa have sent in Botha ahead of him.
14th over - 44-4 Boucher turns Broad away for a single and scampers the hell out of Dodge. De Villiers prods rather tentatively at Broad and gets a thick edge. He then gets into a real tangle attempting to deflect Broad to mid-wicket. Just one from the over, England really turning the screw here.
13th over - 43-4 Another close one, Flintoff angling the ball into De Villiers and rapping him on the pad - but Flintoff went up rather late and it was missing leg-stump. De Villiers picks up three runs with a clip to mid-wicket and Boucher bags a couple with a tuck behind square. One more for Boucher courtesy of a prod to leg.
12th over - 37-4 Broad to continue and he gets one to nip back and strike Boucher on the pad... it was high and missing off. Boucher gets half-forward and the ball could very easily have dribbled onto his stumps there. That's another maiden from Broad, and Pietersen might decide to bowl him all the way through.
11th over - 37-4 Here comes Flintoff. For the South African batsmen, it must be like DI Jack Regan leaving the interrogation room, only for him to be replaced by DCI Gene Hunt. Agony for the Saffers, Flintoff immediately finding his groove and nailing De Villiers to his crease. Flintoff serves up a leg-side wide, but finishes the over with one that jags back and very nearly sends De Villiers' off-stump cartwheeling.
10th over - Duminy c Prior b Broad 8, SA 36-4 BROAD STRIKES AGAIN! Duminy had to play at that just outside off-stump and Prior pouched a very thin edge behind the timbers. Broad on fire here, that's four wickets for the youngster on his home ground - 4-9 from five overs so far, South Africa in tatters here.
9th over - 35-3 Duminy is the new man at the crease - he ran out Kallis in the first one-dayer and was mercilessly sledged by KP for the rest of his innings. De Villiers hacks on the back foot and that's very nearly another wicket, the ball just bypassing Collingwood at backward point - Colly, diving to his left, went with his right hand there, like a goalkeeper attempting to tip a free-kick over the back. One run. Anderson very nearly dimisses Duminy next ball, the ball falling just short of Shah at first slip and dribbling away for four. Good comeback from Duminy, whip-cracking Anderson through the covers for four.
8th over - Kallis c Shah b Broad 6, SA 26-3 Broad gets one to lift sharply and Kallis misses out with an attempted cut. Kallis shows the maker's name but Broad, on his home ground, gets down well to save any run from being taken. AND ANOTHER! Kallis slashes wildly outside off-stump, edges and Shah snaffles the catch at first slip. Wicket maiden from Broad, Kevin Pietersen must think he's Lord God Almighty at the moment.
"My wife, has who completed in the modern Pentathlon, has informed me that it came about as a way of developing all the skills required in a calvary officer. Ride a horse, run across a field, swim a river shoot a pistol and fight a duel. So there would be a strong case for including cigar cutting and brandy quaffing. But don't tell her I said that."
Mark in Muscat Oman in the TMS inbox
7th over - 26-2 Whether Prior should have been going for that at all is a moot point seeing as he snaffled it, it really was a tremendous take. Kallis nurdles to mid-wicket for a single and new batsman De Villiers is on strike. Anderson now has 0-17 from four overs, he's looking it very good nick.
6th over - Smith c Prior b Broad 9, SA 25-2 Smith looks to drive and gets a thick inside edge to mid-wicket for no run. Talking of Carry On, I just made that noise that Sid James used to make when Babs Windsor bent down to pick something up - peachy cover-drive from Smith. ANOTHER WICKET! Smith fences at a ball that nibbles away and Prior takes a magnificent catch diving to his left, taking the ball in front of Shah at first slip. Stick that in your kayak and smoke it, cricket's back in the spotlight...
"If Albie Morkel is a Woody Allen character, surely Vernon Philander was played by Sid James in one of the Carry On films?"
Mark Beauchamp in the TMS inbox
5th over - 21-1 Anderson really in the groove here, delivering the ball at over 90mph and right in the slot. But he errs slightly with the last ball of the over and Kallis rocks back and twirls him through backward point for four. Lovely stroke that.
"Whilst, as an Essex fan, I am obviously distraught by the omission of Bopara, I feel that Pietersen has obviously got some ability as a captain as he has dropped Cook! Hopefully now Ali can work on his formidable, natural Test ability and become a future England Test legend. Bring on Aussies 2009!"

4th over - WICKET - Gibbs c Prior b Broad 10, SA 16-1
"If you wanted to polish your ball with a legal substance, what would it be?" emails Carl Evans from France. I've got to be honest, I haven't given it much thought, although a honey and mustard glaze might be nice. AND ENGLAND HAVE GOT A WICKET! Broad gets one to nip back and Gibbs, advancing down the track, feathers an inside edge to Prior behind the stumps. Good start for England, here comes Kallis. Kallis is off the mark with a nurdle to leg.
3rd over - 15-0 Three runs to Smith to long-leg, and if wasn't for an athletic piece of work from Wright, it would have been four. Gibbs gets lucky, prodding at an Anderson delivery outside off-stump only for the ball to fly past Flintoff at third slip. Not sure if Freddie saw that late, but he was only able to stick out a speculative right mitt. Anderson drops short and is flogged through mid-wicket for four by Gibbs.
2nd over - 4-0 Broad shares the new ball with Anderson, and Bell looks like he's come straight to the ground from The Lizard Lounge - another inexplicable misfield at point and Smith nicks a couple. Nice lines from Broad, however, and it's a rather sleepy start to this one-dayer - and not much chat from you lot either. Pull your fingers out...
1st over - 1-0 Smith shoulders arms against Anderson's first delivery and is clipped on the top of the pad - bit of movement, but it struck him well outside the line. High risk first run from Smith after a prod into the covers - Bell should have hit the stumps from 10 yards away, and that's a big early let-off. Spot on first over from Anderson, right on the money.
"Don't know about 'classier performer than Wright', Bopara is classier than Collingwood and most of the rest of the England team!"

"Please ask your perplexed friend the more pertinent question: how can they think that Paul Collingwood is a better cricketer than Ravi Bopara?"
Tim, Totnes in the TMS inbox
1427: Let it go JR! I know, we'll all a bit depressed, but they're over, they're not coming back for four years - LIVE WITH IT! Here come the South Africa openers, skipper Graeme Smith and Herschelle Gibbs...
"What with shooting, fencing, and riding (as well as swimming and running), is modern pentathlon the toffest sport ever? Did they drop cigar-cutting and brandy-quaffing from the old-school seven-event version?"
JR, London, in the TMS inbox
1420:Christopher Read emails to ask whether I will be using auto-refresh for today's game: the answer, in short, is 'no'. While it was a rip-roaring success during the Olympics, we've decided it's a bit too fiddly for the crash, bang, wallop of one-day cricket as it requires me to add coding to every entry I make. Sir Beefy on Sky reckons 260-270 is a decent score on this Trent Bridge deck...
1413: You have to feel a bit for Bopara - he only bowled two overs at Headingley and didn't get a bat. I think I have to agree with my colleague, the Essex all-rounder strikes me as a classier performer than Wright.
England: Ian Bell, Matt Prior (wk), Owais Shah, Kevin Pietersen (capt), Andrew Flintoff, Paul Collingwood, Samit Patel, Luke Wright, Stuart Broad, Steve Harmison, James Anderson
South Africa: Graeme Smith (capt), Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Mark Boucher (wk), Albie Morkel, Johan Botha, Andre Nel, Dale Steyn, Makhaya Ntini
1402: South Africa skipper Graeme Smith calls correctly and decides to have a bat. Overcast and blustery at Trent Bridge, the England seamers will fancy their chances. However, England will have the inconvenience of chasing under lights. South African all-rounder Albie Morkel, who sounds like a character from a Woody Allen film, comes in for Vernon Philander.
1400: Afternoon all. It's the second one-day international of the NatWest Series today, and we're up in Nottingham for this one. Former skipper Paul Collingwood has returned from a four-match ban and is back in the England team in place of Ravi Bopara. The man opposite me is perplexed: "How can they think that Luke Wright is a better cricketer than Ravi Bopara?"
