Collingwood 'will return to form'

England coach Peter Moores has backed Paul Collingwood to rediscover his best form after a recent lean spell with the bat for Durham and the national team.

Collingwood has gone 22 innings without a Test century and has yet to reach 50 in any form of cricket this season.

But a battling 24 not out saw England to victory against New Zealand in the second Test, and Moores said: "He's had a tough few Tests but that happens.

"He's a scrapper and got us home at Old Trafford. It was classic Collingwood."

Collingwood is England's one-day captain and Moores used the example of his Test counterpart, Michael Vaughan, as an illustration of how quickly form can turn around.

"It's only two weeks ago Michael Vaughan was being talked about and since then he's got a very good hundred, so things move really quickly in sport," said Moores.

"Paul wants to score runs and we've got this nice little period now where he can get himself ready to go at Trent Bridge.

"He's a touch player and he knows he's struggling to find it at the moment and unfortunately in the build-up to the Test series he didn't get any runs in the couple of games he played.

"Because of the nature of the way he plays there are always people asking whether he's good enough but he does average 40 and he's got a double hundred in Australia.

"He's a good player in both forms of the game and he contributes in lots of ways for England."

Collingwood has taken 14 Test wickets and 76 one-day international wickets, and is regarded as one of England's most accomplished fielders.
