England in Sri Lanka 1982 - the first chapter
Arjuna Ranutanga (right) made a fifty on debut but Sri Lanka struggled against the likes of Ian Botham in their first ever Test
England have only played eight Tests in Sri Lanka but they were the very first opponents for the island nation in February 1982 after it was granted Test status.

The hosts slumped to 34-4 on a damp pitch in Colombo as Ian Botham and Bob Willis struck.

Ranjan Madugalle, who went on to become a respected ICC match referee, and an 18-year-old by the name of Arjuna Ranatunga - who would go on to captain the team - made half centuries to rally them.

However, left-arm spinner Derek 'Deadly' Underwood removed both and mopped up the lower order as Sri Lanka were bowled out for only 218 after winning the toss.
