England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff will play for his county Lancashire as a batsman only against Yorkshire in a one-day match on Sunday.
Flintoff's absence would upset the balance of England's team
He is bidding to get fit for the second Test against West Indies at Headingley which begins the following Friday.
Flintoff was ruled out of the ongoing first Test at Lord's, after suffering discomfort on his left ankle.
He has had two operations on that ankle over the last three years, and missed most of last summer as a result.
In a statement Friday, the England and Wales Cricket Board said that it would review Flintoff's fitness after the match.
There has been speculation he would be ruled out of all four Tests against West Indies - and in a worst case scenario could be looking at another operation.
With four men hitting centuries against West Indies at Lord's, finding players to drop may not be an easy task either.
