Fletcher apologises for big loss
D Fletcher
Normally we can rely on one of them to get a total but they are struggling with form and confidence

Fletcher on Andrew Strauss and Paul Collingwood
Coach Duncan Fletcher apologised publicly for England's latest one-day defeat to Australia in Adelaide.

They were bowled out by Australia for 110 to be thrashed by nine wickets and he said: "We have to offer an apology, we just didn't play any good cricket.

"The boys are very disappointed. We have to make sure we keep them going - there's still a lot of purpose there."

Captain Andrew Flintoff said: "It's just not good enough. We are far better players than we are showing."

Flintoff's record as a captain in one-dayers now reads nine losses in 10 matches. He is standing in for Michael Vaughan, who is due to return for next Tuesday's match against New Zealand.

The all-rounder said: "It wasn't great. We didn't bat too well against New Zealand last Tuesday, being bowled out for 120.

"Today we were desperate to improve on that. We won a toss, decided to bat, and 110 in the first innings just isn't good enough.

"It's disappointing for people who have turned out today to see a spectacle of cricket and we've not played our part.

"We can challenge Australia, we've done it in the past but today we were far below par.

"We started not too bad - 70-odd for two - and then just fell in a heap. We seem to lose one wicket, then lose four or five.

We have to give a thought to resting [Strauss or Collingwood] and bringing in a young guy like Ravi Bopara

Duncan Fletcher

"On Tuesday the lads were hurting after being beaten by New Zealand; today they're feeling worse.

"The bowlers are doing fine - it's just the batsmen letting their part of the bargain down."

Fletcher, for the second time in three days, lamented the poor form of Paul Collingwood and Andrew Strauss.

"Normally we can rely on one of them to get a total but they are struggling with form and confidence.

"They realise that a lot depends on them - they have to believe they can set the example for the younger players.

"We've been going since February and we'd like to give them a rest but we haven't got those resources to swap players around.

"But we have to give a thought to resting one of them and bringing in a young guy like Ravi Bopara."
