England 'retain World Cup belief'
England all-rounder Paul Collingwood
There's no point in talking a big game, you have to do it on the pitch

England's Paul Collingwood
Paul Collingwood insists England are still genuine contenders for next year's World Cup despite their poor showing at the ICC Champions Trophy.

England's solitary win in India, coupled with their inconsistent form over the last year, has led many to write off their chances of success.

"We're still confident we can mount a serious challenge at the World Cup," the all-rounder told BBC Sport.

"We have to forget about the last 12 months, but the potential is there."

England gained a consolation win over the West Indies at the weekend, but Duncan Fletcher's side had already lost to Australia and India to end their hopes of progressing.

"It's a massive positive to finish like that but it's also frustrating for us," added Collingwood.

"We keep teasing ourselves in one-day cricket. We know how good we can be but we don't put the performances in consistently.

"If we play to our potential we can beat anybody and we've shown that - it's not just big talk, results have shown we can do that."

Sri Lanka whitewashed England 5-0 in the one-day series in June and July, but England bounced back from 2-0 down to draw with Pakistan later in the summer.

England's odds for next year's World Cup have lengthened to 10-1, but Collingwood insisted the team had the talent to prosper in the West Indies.

"We know we can't put in performances like some of the ones we've given in the last 12 months - if we do, we'll be nowhere near the mark at the World Cup," added Collingwood.

We treat one-day cricket with the same intensity and attention to detail as we do Test cricket

England chairman of selectors David Graveney

"But if you look at Kevin Pietersen, Freddie Flintoff, Marcus Trescothick - not many teams will fancy coming up against a batting line-up like that.

"We're confident we can do it, but we have to go out on the pitch and forget about everything else. There's no point in talking a big game, you have to do it on the pitch."

Chairman of selectors David Graveney insisted England would be doing everything possible to get things back on track before the World Cup.

"Nobody is sitting on their hands and not rating one-day cricket as important as Test match cricket. For me, it is equally important," he said.

"We treat one-day cricket with the same intensity and attention to detail as we do Test cricket.

"It is true that some people who support English cricket are only interested in Test matches

"But we know we have to earn the support we get for one-day games - you do not have that by right - and you do that by putting up good performances and winning matches.

"We have not done that and we know we have work to do."
