Strauss defends England selection

Strauss hit a half-century in England's innings of 271-9
Andrew Strauss defended his decision to leave out spin all-rounder Michael Yardy after England's defeat in the third one-day international.

Pakistan beat England by two wickets at the Rose Bowl in turning conditions.

Strauss admitted: "We didn't think it would turn quite as much as it did. Jamie Dalrymple did a great job.

"We showed a lot more positivity with the bat but more than anything we showed fight. If we keep that going, we'll turn it around sooner or later."

Strauss hit 50 as England posted 271-9 off their 50 overs, but Pakistan overhauled that total with six balls and two wickets to spare as Younis Khan hit a fine 101.

It's a big hundred for me

Strauss said: "We put the ball in the right areas and we were a bit unlucky with a couple of things.

"All credit to Pakistan - people keep getting hundreds, and that's the most important thing in one-day cricket. Younis played very well today."

Younis paid tribute to his team-mate Mohammad Yousuf, with whom he shared a partnership of 167 - a national record for the third wicket against England.

Younis said: "It was a good team effort because Yousuf and I played positive cricket.

"It's a big hundred for me. It's against England so it's a dream come true.

"I've been out a lot of times in the 70s and 80s because I've come in down the order and played for my team.

"But I will play wherever my country needs me, at three or six."
