England's big-hitting middle order duo Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen were pleased with their team's position after the home team plundered 407.
Flintoff, who returned to form with five sixes in his 68, said: "It was nice, I'd like a few more but walking out I'd probably have settled for it.
"We got stuck in on a wicket that was a bit slow, hopefully we got best use."
Pietersen, with three fifties in his first three Test innings, said: "It's fantastic to be part of this team."
The dashing Hampshire batsman insisted that the scintillating start to his Test career was not the plain sailing his scores suggested.
"It's never an easy game," he said.
"When you're in the runs you've just got to try and take advantage because you go through highs and lows and you've got to cash in when the going is good.
"It's nice to reward people for the support I've been getting over the last couple of months."
Pietersen dismissed suggestions that England could have made more of the 112-run opening partnership, and also the exhilarating 103 shared by Flintoff and himself.
"Hindsight is always the best sight," he said.
"I think 407 is pretty good, I think we've done a great job as a team, everyone has contributed in some way.
"It's fantastic to be part of the runs and to see Freddie back in the runs, to play second fiddle to Freddie was fantastic."
Flintoff, who was dismissed for nought and three at Lord's, admitted that he had adopted a more familiar approach to his innings at Edgbaston.
"I went out there with a more positive frame of mind and tried to get on top of them a little bit," he said.
"You go in there cold and Shane Warne is a fine bowler, a few went through my legs and all sorts!
"After Lord's last week where we struggled with the bat I think we're pleased with 400 and the fashion in which we got them, we could have got more but I think we've had a decent day."
Flintoff revealed that Michael Vaughan would have batted had he won the toss and said: "The wicket was good, hopefully now it will deteriorate a bit.
"It started a bit damp, there were a few dents in it, hopefully if it dries out the dents might come into play a bit more and it will go a bit more up and down with maybe a bit of spin as well."
