Simon Jones will miss England's tour of Pakistan after failing a fitness test on his injured right ankle.
The Glamorgan paceman has failed to recover from the ankle spurs that sidelined him for the final Ashes Test and will now undergo surgery.
"I've rested for three weeks and it has got worse. It's very disappointing," Jones told BBC Radio Five Live.
"The recovery period is around three months which gives me time to recover for the India tour in February."
An England and Wales Cricket Board medical statement said: "We have tried a number of measures to help Simon's ankle injury to settle."
Jones added: "It's not a serious operation but I've got to get it done and get on with the recovery work and I'm sure it will be fine.
"Some things come along and they can make you a better person and cricketer and that is the way I am looking at this injury.
"I'm trying to be as positive as I can and I will work as hard as I can to get back in the team."
Chairman of selectors David Graveney has admitted the loss of Jones will have a big impact on England's tour of Pakistan.
"It is big blow. He formed a partnership as one of the four fast bowlers which proved such a test for Australia in the Ashes," said Graveney.
"The combination of the four bowlers was really a perfect mix."
"Simon recovered from a serious injury in Australia so hopefully he can do the same with this one."
Jones was an integral part of England's Ashes triumph, claiming 18 wickets, many of which were with reverse swing at a lively pace.
England leave for Pakistan on 26 October and play three Tests and five one-day internationals prior to Christmas.
Hampshire's Chris Tremlett, who was also named in the 17-man tour squad, is another injury concern with knee trouble and he will continue to receive treatment.
Chief medical officer Peter Gregory will assess Tremlett and report to the selectors, who will then decide on any possible replacement.
