England fast bowler Simon Jones has been given only a 50% chance of touring Pakistan because of an ankle injury.
Jones will have a scan on his right ankle next Friday and must be bowling again when England's training camp starts in Loughborough on 17 October.
"It is very much 50-50," England physio Kirk Russell told the Sunday Times.
"If things continue to progress well, we will look to increase the amount of weight the ankle is bearing before Simon starts running again."
England arrive in Pakistan on 26 October for a tour that includes three Tests and five one-day internationals.
Jones took 18 wickets at 21 runs each during the Ashes series before the injury hit during the fourth Test, forcing him to miss the finale at The Oval.
The bone spur, which is caused by the bowler dragging his back foot in delivery and is the root of inflammation around the joint, could need surgery in future.
But England's medical team has so far opted for a course of anti-inflammatory tablets, injections and ice treatment.
He was named in a 17-man Test squad last Monday, with both James Anderson and Chris Tremlett included as fast-bowling reserves.
