The left-handed opener was the man of the series and was in phenomenal form plundering three successive centuries and 487 runs at 69.57.

It was my first tour overseas, clearly I was very excited at the start of it.

I knew that we were into the serious business when the first Test came around because all the senior players, Botham, Lamb and Gower were concentrating their minds and from there nothing seemed to go wrong.

His form tailed off before the last of his 25 Tests in 1989. Aged 47, he is still heavily involved in cricket as a respected ICC Test match referee.
