Jones spills the crucial stumping chance off the unfortunate Giles
|
England had their chances, but Geraint Jones' blemishes behind the stumps allowed Shane Warne to lead Australia's efforts to deny England their victory.
Jones missed a stumping and dropped a catch as only 14 overs of play were possible.
Add to that the two chances he dropped in the Lord's Test, and he must be testing the loyalty of the selectors to the limit.
The stumping was straightforward in that he never lost sight of the ball.
Ashley Giles was bowling over the wicket, and Warne, on 55, advanced down the pitch, with his body and bat on the leg side.
The ball landed in the rough, and spun sharply, but Jones fumbled and by the time he managed to grab the ball, Warne had recovered his ground.

If England can clean up this innings quickly and get batting again, they could still leave themselves three sessions in which to bowl Australia out and win the game

The catch was a sitter. Flintoff was giving it everything to rough up Warne and, following a fiery bouncer, he bowled a full delivery outside the off-stump.
Warne, on 68, nibbled and the ball and flicked the outside edge but Jones fumbled the easy chance.
Warne is enjoying a remarkable series, even by his standards, and he is now only 22 runs away from his maiden Test century.
With the redoubtable Gillespie showing excellent defensive technique and having batted for 72 minutes, Warne has every chance of reaching that special milestone in the morning.
But England still lead by 180.
If they can clean up this innings quickly and get batting again, they could still leave themselves three sessions in which to bowl Australia out and win the game.
