England's win as it happened
Latest: England 282-3 beat New Zealand by seven wickets

Nasser Hussain hit a superb century as he guided England to a seven-wicket win over New Zealand in the first Test.

Hussain notched up the 14th Test ton of his career as he shared an unbroken 139-run stand with Graham Thorpe.

Thorpe ended 51 not out and earlier Andrew Strauss was run out for 83, missing out on becoming the third batsman to hit two centuries on debut.

Stand-in captain Marcus Trescothick was caught and bowled by Daryl Tuffey for two and Mark Butcher was out for six.

Latest action (all times BST):

1720: Hussain smashes a superb four down the ground and then hits another to notch up a fantastic century and then hits the winning runs for a memorable England win.

1717: Hussain needs seven more runs for his 14th Test ton as England come within 10 of beating New Zealand, he takes a single and is then back on strike.

1707: A cheeky edge from Hussain goes for two runs and surpasses his previous best score batting last in a match and Thorpe gets in on the run-feast too with a four down the ground. Thorpe celebrates a fifty, off 97 balls.

1703: Martin replaces Vettori at the Pavilion End and Hussain flashes at it and it goes over Styris' head in the slips for four.

1659 Tuffey takes the new ball and beats Hussain on the off-side but he fails to find an edge, then Hussain hits him for four off a short delivery and flicks another boundary for good measure.

1652: New Zealand captain Fleming decides against taking the new ball as Vettori switches ends.

1648: Cairns comes on for Vetorri and Hussain immediately smacks him but it is picked up in the field, but then Thorpe pulls him for four and the 100 partnership comes up Thorpe and Hussain.

1644: Hussain takes two boundaries off Oram, getting down the pitch to drive through long-on then turning square on the leg side to move within 50 of victory. Oram leavs the field at the end of the over with an apparent injury.

1639: Thorpe looks for a single past the slip fielder but he gathers it and Thorpe just gets back in time. Hussain gets down the pitch and drives a single into the covers.

1628: Hussain and Thorpe trade singles before the drinks break. During the break the umpires notice a split seam on the ball and change it.

1621: Hussain goes on the attack against Martin, lofting him over mid-on and cutting three more. Thorpe misses with a pull.

1619: Hussain pushes a couple on the off-side to complete a vital 50 from 158 balls. Vettori has an appeal turned down, hitting Hussain just outside off stump.

1611: Thorpe edges Martin high in the air through third man for four to bring up the 200. Hussain pushes to point and Thorpe sends him back firmly. Martin dishes up four wides, heading past Thorpe's hip at waist height. With a no ball included the over eventually lasts eight balls, costing 12.

1608: Hussain edges Vettori just past a diving Styris at slip.

1605: Hussain nudges a single off Martin and Thorpe turns one to midwicket.

1601: For the first time this session, Hussain gets down the wicket to Vettori. He cannot find the gap at midwicket but it is enough for the 50 partnership.

1555: New Zealand call on Martin again, replacing Styris, whose second spell from the Pavilion End was not as threatening. Thorpe turns a single to midwicket. Martin gets a delivery to spit and seam in to Hussain, who manages to push a single.

1553: Thorpe turns a single off Vettori fine, just past wicket-keeper McCullum.

1549: Thorpe scampers two to take England within 100 runs of victory. Hussain cuts to the boundary where a sprawling Cairns cannot save it, to the delight of the crowd.

1453: Styris returns to replace Martin at the Pavilion End. Hussain digs out a yorker in a maiden over.

1450: Hussain is struck painfully on the elbow but is settled enough to square-drive a boundary

1434: Hussain takes a couple to long leg off Cairns.

1425: Strauss's dreams of another century are ended by a run out as Hussain pushes to point, where Cairns gathers running in and throws for the keeper to take off the bails.
New Zealand 143-3 (Strauss 83)

1419: Cairns gets his first bowl of the innings, replacing Vettori at the Nursery End. Hussain plants him through extra cover, down the hill for four. Hussain edges as umpire Koertzen shouts "no ball" and a diving McCullum fails to take it.

1416: After the drinks break the crowd is still enthusiastically clapping every single run, like Strauss's push to cover. Hussain is beaten wafting at a delivery that seams away massively.

1355: Martin's extra pace is reintroduced at the Pavilion End. The batsmen exchange quick singles.

1346: Strauss again finds the gap in the cover fielders for a silky four along the ground. Nerves restored he cuts the next ball square.

1345: Styris completes a maiden to Hussain.

1338: Strauss continues to live dangerously as Oram's slower ball beats his proffered bat.

1334: Coming around the wicket, Styris gets another delivery to rear up to Strauss. Beaten a second time, Strauss regains his composure with consecutive fours, the first a flick though the midwicket to bring up the 100 and the second a late push past the slips.

1332: Strauss drives to cover, where Vettori fields well to prevent a boundary.

1329: Styris gets some extra bounce to surprise Strauss with a delivery that balloons off the glove.

1318: Styris switches ends and Hussain miscues for the first boundary of the session, through third man.

1311: Vettori resumes after lunch and has a good appeal against Strauss turned down, the delivery turning sharply and staying low. Strauss gets a single on the leg side.

Lunch

1227: Styris bowls the final over before lunch. A loud appeal against Hussain is turned down, perhaps going over the top. Hussain is turned back looking for a single and just regaisn his ground in time to go to lunch unbeaten on 15. Strauss has 52.

1223: Denied runs on the off side Hussain goes down the wicket to Vettori and picks him over mid-on for four. After swapping singles, Hussain deals a swinging sweep that just gets past Astle at short fine leg.

1222: Styris bowls his first maiden of the match, getting the ball to leave Strauss well.

1217: Vettori gains enough bounce to get a delivery stuck in Strauss's face guard as he gets stride forward.

1211: Styris - who took a wicket with his fourth ball in the first innings - replaces Martin at the Pavilion End. He over-steps for a no ball early too - the Kiwis perhaps still struggling with the slope.

Strauss edges just wide of the lone slip, prompting Fleming to bring in another close fielder. He slices three to bring up his 50 from 97 balls.

1208: Strauss gains the first runs off Vettori for three overs, hitting against the spin on the off side. A fullish delivery keeps at ankle height to beat batsman and wicket-keeper and runs four four byes.

1200: Vettori completes another maiden to Hussain, bowling with accuracy and gaining good bounce.

1128: Martin replaces Oram at the Pavilion End and gains immediate success as Butcher flashes outside off stump and Fleming collects the edge at second slip.
England 35-2 (Butcher 6)

1125: New Zealand celebrate what they believe is a bat-pad catch off Butcher. Umpire Koetzen is unimpressed but replays prove the fielders correct.

1120: Strauss just gets down on a delivery from Oram that keeps horribly low. Both batsman gain a single from a delivery anglind down leg side.

1115: Spinner Vettori replaces Tuffey at the Nursery End with much expected of him on a wearing pitch. Strauss nudges a leg-side single. Butcher looks to take the left-armer on but struggles to gauge the turn.

1111: Butcher and Strauss both pinch quick singles off balls that keep low. Oram moves around the wicket to Butcher.

1106: Tuffey strays down leg side again and Butcher helps himself to a single. Strauss drives a wider delivery brilliantly through the covers for a tension-relieving boundary.

1102: Oram over-steps for a no ball. Butcher drives into the stumps at the non-striker's end and can then only grin as he is beaten by a delivery that nips back wildly. He flicks through midwicket but the balls slows up the hill and a sliding Cairns saves the boundary.

1057: A delivery from Tuffey stays low to new batsman Butcher. He gets off the mark with a single to midwicket.

1054: Oram appeals after a delivery heading past Strauss's leg stump. He completes a maiden.

1044: Trescothick pushes a single to mid-off for his first run of the day.

1039: Strauss turns Tuffey to fine leg for the first boundary of the day. The fielder gets round to keep Strauss to two next time he uses the shot but Tuffey is erring down leg side regularly. A push to square leg makes eight off the over.

1036: Oram returns after an over from the Pavilion End last night by spinner Vettori. His first delivery pitches on off and seams across the batsman. The second elicits a huge appeal but pitched outside leg. Strauss pushes to midwicket for the first run of the day.

1033: Trescothick has an impetuous waft at a wider delivery from Tuffey, failing to connect. There are two slips and two gullies waiting for just that shot. A maiden over.

1027: Trescothick and Strauss join New Zealand's fielders in the middle. Tuffey resumes from the Nursery End.

1000: The teams complete their warm-ups on a brilliantly sunny day at Lord's.
