Thorpe wary of backlash

Graham Thorpe is wary of a backlash from the West Indies
England batsman Graham Thorpe has warned of a backlash from the West Indies after their first Test humiliation at Sabina Park.

The once mighty Windies slumped to their lowest Test score of 47 before England notched a 10-wicket victory.

"We have to expect the West Indies to bounce back because of that," insisted the Surrey left-hander.

"No professional sportsman likes to be beaten in that way and bowled out for that sort of score."

Thorpe has personal experience of just how dangerous West Indies can be.

He is the sole survivor of the England line-up that were humiliated in Trinidad 10 years ago.

Curtley Ambrose delivered a breathtaking display to claim six for 24 and dismiss the tourists for 46 in only 19.1 overs in that match.

But England picked themselves up to produce a magical display and win the next Test in Barbados just days later.

Thorpe is aware the West Indies can do the same when the sides return to the Queens Park Oval - the scene of that England hammering a decade earlier.
It was the most humiliated I've ever been on a cricket field

"They will be hurt because we were hurt," he added.

"I suppose the only advantage we had is that we were away from home when it happened because I think you feel it more at home.

"You're professional sportsmen and you have to get on with it and get stuck in and that's how we responded.

"Your pride is hurt and you do as much as you can to turn the game around - we did it in Barbados.

"It was the most humiliated I've ever been on a cricket field.

"But I remember Mike Atherton saying at the time that it was a top spell of bowling and it was.

"You knew we were up against a great bowler and we didn't really have the answers on that day.

"But you were hurt and it makes you analyse your game a little bit and your pride is dented.

"Anything is possible in cricket. We came back and won in Barbados so we're well aware that West Indies are not a pushover.

"They're a hugely talented side who could come back and win the next game."
