Third Test, Old Trafford, day four (close)
Sri Lanka 253 and 63-1; England 512

England go in search of a 2-0 Test series win - only their third by that margin on home soil since 1985 - when the third Test against Sri Lanka resumes this morning.

Sri Lanka start the final day of the last Test on 63-1, 196 runs behind England with opener Marvan Atapattu unable to bat due to a broken right index finger.

Alex Tudor and Matthew Hoggard have stepped into the void created by the absence of an injured Andy Caddick to put England in control.

The pair shared seven wickets as Sri Lanka were forced to follow-on when they were dismissed for 253 at Old Trafford.

Bad light forced the players off the field early on Sunday but with better weather forecast today, Sri Lanka will not be able to rely on the elements to come to their rescue.

"I knew it was going to be hard work without Andy Caddick and someone had to step up," Tudor said.

"It's one of those wickets where you have to use the short pitched ball a lot to try and unsettle the batsmen.

"When the wicket is flat you have to bang in and try to get wickets a different way. My coach always told me bowling on flat wickets is what you have to do in Test matches.

"I have been in Australia where the wickets are nice to batsmen and you have to get the ball in the right areas. It went right for me here.

"When fit I know I can do a job. I have played four of my six Tests against Australia and done well which is the benchmark."

The last time England won a series by a two Test margin was in 2000 against the West Indies, but before that you have to go back to 1985 and success against Australia for a similar margin of victory.

It will also be England's first series win for more than 12 months, with the last victory also against Sri Lanka last March.
