Major Scarborough ground refurbishment picks up pace

Scarborough Cricket Club's major ground refurbishment is picking up pace as the new season, and the 125th Scarborough Cricket Festival, approaches.

The work includes major rebuilding of the pavilion and tea rooms, plus new toilets and a new club shop.

Chairman Bill Mustoe told BBC Radio York: "It's probably the most exciting development (here) in 100 years.

"The whole project will result in spectators having a much more enjoyable experience at the venue."

The impetus for improving the North Marine Road ground began in mid-2009 following critical comments of the ageing arena from David Hopps, The Guardian's cricket correspondent and former Yorkshire Post reporter.

That provoked a tidy-up in early 2010, led by the Nat West Cricket Force project, in which former England batsman Mike Gatting painted the West Stand railings.

After that, The Guardian voted it Ground of the Year, much to Mustoe's delight.

"That attracted some interest," he said. "And one of our former major sponsors Tesco said they would like to help us.

"They put together a partnership of around eight different companies under their Community Project scheme.

"We'll have a new bar area and new seating on the popular bank. In the pavilion we're putting in a lift which will enable disabled access, which we've never had."

This year's fixture programme will include Scarborough's first Twenty20 game, when Yorkshire face Durham in July, with the five-day Festival to follow.

"I think it's going to be a stellar year at one of the world's greatest cricket venues," Mustoe added.
