Worcs sign Sri Lanka's Fernando

Dilhara Fernando
Fernando will bolster Worcestershire attack

Worcestershire have signed Sri Lankan paceman Dilhara Fernando as the club's overseas player until the winter.

The 29-year-old will fly in on Friday to be available for the Pro40 match against Hampshire Hawks on Saturday.

He replaces seamer Imran Arif, who is de-registered to make room, as the Bears attempt to cover for the injured Simon Jones, Kabir Ali and Matt Mason.

"I've been looking for a quality replacement and we're about there," said director of cricket Steve Rhodes.

"The Sri Lankan Cricket Board has been very helpful as they want Dilhara to play some cricket rather than rest.

"He's obviously a quality player who can bowl with good speed - he's very tall and gets a lot of bounce, which should be good at New Road as the tall bowlers tend to get a bit out of it.

"We welcome his experience at a crucial part of the season as our attack is a little bit depleted."
