Shafayat stars in Notts victory

NatWest Pro40 D1, New Road: Nottinghamshire 188-4 bt Worcestershire 184-9 by six wickets

Last year's runners-up Nottinghamshire opened the 2008 Pro40 season with a six-wicket floodlit win over defending champions Worcestershire at New Road.

An unbeaten century stand between Bilal Shafayat and Adam Voges guided Notts to victory in the Division One encounter.

Shafayat (67) and Voges (64) were both unbeaten as the Outlaws reached their target of 185 with 22 balls to spare.

Steve Davies scored 74 in Worcestershire's below-par 184-9, Notts all-rounder Samit Patel claiming 3-33.

Last season the only match Steve Rhodes' side lost in the competition was after they had already been crowned champions, ultimately finishing three points better off than runners-up Notts.

But Worcestershire were not at full strength on Tuesday night as they played under the New Road lights for the first time in two years.

They chose to rest England paceman Simon Jones in readiness for him to face his former side Glamorgan in Thursday's County Championship Division Two match at New Road.

Worcestershire won the toss and batted first, but lost Vikram Solanki, Stephen Moore and Ben Smith as they slumped to 40-3 inside the opening nine overs.

Skipper Solanki was trapped lbw by paceman Andre Adams before Moore and Smith both fell to Darren Pattinson.

Davies and Graeme Hick then put on 76 in 16 overs before Davies was stumped off Graeme Swann after striking 10 fours off 82 balls in his second one-day half-century of the season.

Thee wickets for Patel ensured Notts were well in the hunt. But then Kabir Ali rapidly ripped out Matthew Wood and Mark Wagh.

Graeme Swann played on after hitting a six and four fours in his 25-ball 28. And, when Patel fell for just nine, the visitors found themselves in trouble at 60-4, only for Shafayat and Voges to take charge as the floodlights took effect.

And Shafayat, with six fours in his 67 not out off 73 balls, and Voges, who took 85 deliveries over his 64, guided the visitors home.
