Warwickshire appoint Jim Troughton as new captain

Warwickshire have named Jim Troughton as their new captain following the resignation of Ian Westwood.

The 31-year-old, who has played six one-day internationals for England, first appeared for the Bears in 1999 and made his first-class bow in 2001.

"I'm very proud," Troughton told BBC WM. "It's something that I've always wanted to do since I was a young lad.

"When [director of cricket] Ashley Giles asked me I didn't really hesitate. I'm looking forward to it."

He continued: "You have mixed feelings really because you feel for Westy, who's done a great job. He's had two and a half seasons in charge and we've won three trophies.

"It's not an easy decision to step down and I know that he feels a lot better for it, which is great for him and great for Warwickshire as well.

"But then there's a part of you that thinks it would be interesting if you got a text or a call to see if anyone's interested, and that's what happened.

"Ash sent me a text, we went for a meeting and here we are."

Troughton was part of the Bears team that won the Clydesdale Bank 40 in September, and was captain for the latter stages of their run to the last eight of the Friends Provident t20.

But the left-hander struggled for runs in first-class cricket last term, making just one half-century in 30 Championship innings.

Troughton hopes the extra responsibility of captaining the Bears will help him rediscover his best form with the bat.

"You look back at other captains we've had and I think opening the batting and captaining is an extremely difficult job," he added.

"Where I bat in the order, I think I can benefit the side.

"That responsibility is something that I'm craving now. I've got to that age where I'm taking that responsibility on and I think I'll benefit for it rather than it hampering me.

"The times that I captained the team in the Twenty20, it's pretty fast-paced and decisions need to made quickly.

"I really enjoyed it, although we didn't get over the line as I would have like to, but I enjoyed all the emotions that you got through as a captain in that short space of time."
