Warwickshire's Ian Westwood has resigned as club captain in order to help improve his batting performances.

The 28-year-old had been Bears skipper for two years but relinquished the role in one-day cricket last season.

He told the club website: "I feel my own performances have suffered at times during my period as skipper and I have reluctantly decided to stand down.

"I am looking forward to remaining part of this exciting, talented squad for many years to come."

Westwood, who replaced Darren Maddy as Bears captain in November 2008, added: "Since I was a youngster it was my ambition to lead Warwickshire County Cricket Club onto the field as club captain.

"To achieve this at the start of the 2009 season was a dream come true for me."

Warwickshire say a decision on Westwood's successor "will be taken shortly and in good time for the 2011 season".

Director of cricket Ashley Giles paid tribute to Westwood, saying: "Ian has made some major sacrifices whilst taking on this role and he has learnt a great deal about leadership as well as his own game.

"It has been a real pleasure working closely with him and we want to place on record our thanks and appreciation for everything he has given to Warwickshire during this period."
