Sussex off-spinner Ollie Rayner remaining patient

Ollie Rayner is happy to wait for his chance to break into the Sussex team.

The Sussex off-spinner, 25, has only appeared in one first-team game since being recalled from a loan spell at Middlesex last month.

"Playing at Middlesex got me cricket at a stage of the season where I possibly wouldn't have got it here at Hove," Rayner told BBC Sussex.

"Ultimately, I want to play all forms of the game. This is my home and where I'd like to be doing it."

He added: "If I'm not playing one form of cricket, I hope to cement down a place in another form."

Rayner's only first-team appearance since his return to Hove has been the home CB40 victory over Derbyshire on 18 May.

"Unfortunately the weather has turned a little bit and got a bit colder after a dry spring," said Rayner.

"I'm hanging tight and we'll just have to see how the season unfolds.

"If it's dry, there's no reason to say Monty Panesar and I won't be twisting our way through sides at the latter end of the season."

Rayner still believes he could one day emulate Nottinghamshire and England spinner Graeme Swann, who has become one of the world's top spinners after being handed his Test debut against India in December 2008.

"I'm still relatively young in my career and I don't want to wait around," said Rayner. "But that's what Graeme Swann did.

Graeme Swann is beginning to show that there is a future in off-spin. Hopefully I'm that future

"That's what I've got to look towards. I don't necessarily want to be waiting around until I'm 30 but, if that's the way it happens, that's the way it happens.

"Seeing Graeme Swann do so well has given a real lift to finger-spinners, which were seen at one stage as a dying art.

"He's beginning to show that there is a future in off-spin. Hopefully I'm that future after Swanny."
